More than 100 Academicians Share Insights on Leading Technologies

The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen marked its 10th anniversary by inviting academic leaders and more than 100 academicians to share insights and explore the academic frontiers of artificial intelligence, mathematics, materials chemistry, and cell gene therapy and regenerative medicine at four major forums on March 24. 

 

"Artificial Intelligence" Plus Academician Forum

The "Artificial Intelligence Plus" Academician Forum was co-hosted by Peng Cheng Laboratory and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and organized by the Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society (AIRS).

The forum invited over 30 academicians including Academician Gao Wen, director of Peng Cheng Laboratory, Academician Li Guojie, former director of the Institute of Computing Technology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Dai Qionghai, president of the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence, and Academician Shen Xiangyang, presidential chair professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. They explored how to utilize artificial intelligence — a new quality productive force — to provide more positive momentum for enriching the lives of the Chinese people, fostering technological innovation, upgrading industries, and advancing the economy. 

During the discussion session chaired by Academician Gao Wen, the participants focused on the opportunities and challenges of "Artificial Intelligence Plus." The topics included what AI will add, why it will add it, and how it will be added. They covered issues such as AI education, the cultivation of knowledge systems, and the matching of academic and industry talent.

After the forum, guests from enterprises and the government visited the AI + Robotics Achievements Exhibition at the Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society (AIRS). The exhibition showcased a wide range of scientific research and industry achievements and included medical robots, bridge maintenance robots, embodied intelligence and humanoid robots, land, sea, air, and space robots, and low-carbon large models.

 

Forum on Advance and Development of Mathematics and Data Science

The Forum on Advance and Development of Mathematics and Data Science was hosted by The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen in collaboration with the Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data, the Shenzhen International Center For Industrial and Applied  Mathematics, and Liu Hui Laboratory.

The forum included more than 10 academicians, including Academician Ma Zhiming from the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science and the Chinese Academy of Sciences,  Academician Tian Gang, chair professor at Peking University, Academician Yuan Yaxiang, vice president of the China Association for Science and Technology, Academician Xu Zongben, professor at Xi'an Jiaotong University, Academician Jiang Song, vice director of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, over 20 department heads from the School of Mathematics and School of Data Science, and mathematics and data science experts and scholars from home and abroad. 

The forum proceeded in a "1+1" mode of disciplinary development reports and round-table discussions. It was chaired by Professor Wang Xiaoping, presidential chair Professor of the School of Science and Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and deputy director of the Shenzhen International Center for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Professor Dai Jiangang, dean of the School of Data Science at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, reported on the development of mathematical and data science disciplines at CUHK-Shenzhen, including progress and achievements in faculty development, student training, research projects, and international cooperation.

The round-table discussion session was chaired by Academician Luo Zhiquan, vice president of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and director of the Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data.

Thirteen academicians in the field engaged in in-depth exchanges during the forum titled "Frontier Dynamics and Discipline Construction in Mathematics and Data Science." They shared valuable insights and experiences on crucial issues such as the construction of international research-oriented universities, development trends of mathematics and data science disciplines, innovation in talent training mechanisms, and strategic directions for research and innovation. During the interactive Q&A session, the guests had a lively discussion about the impact of new artificial intelligence technologies such as ChatGPT and Sora on traditional mathematics education and research.

"New Chemistry, New Materials, New Ideas"

The "New Chemistry, New Materials, New Ideas" forum had over 30 academicians in the field of materials chemistry, including Academician Bai Chunli from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Cheng Jinpei from Tsinghua University, Academician Gan Yong from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Academician Yang Yuliang from Fudan University, Academician Zhang Xi from Tsinghua University/Jilin University, Academician Ding Kuiling from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Academician Zhou Yu from the Harbin Institute of Technology.

This forum was organized by The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and co-organized by the School of Science and Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, the Shenzhen Advanced Institute of Polymer Materials, and the Shenzhen Institute of Molecular Aggregate Science and Engineering. Its aim was to promote the integration of industry, academia, and research and innovation in the fields of materials chemistry and polymers in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

At the forum, Academician Bai Chunli, former president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a speech. Academicians Gan Yong, Zhang Xi, Zhou Yu, and Ding Kuiling each reported on themes such as "Thoughts on the Development of Innovative Technologies for Modern New Materials," "Polymer Depolymerization and Recyclable Renewable Materials," "The Opportunities, Challenges, and Strategies of Joint School Operation in Different Locations - Interaction between Universities and Urban Development," and "Synthetic Science Integrating Chemistry and Biology." Experts and scholars from various research institutions and universities focused on materials chemistry and used the forum as an important platform to share innovative ideas.

 

GBA International Cell/Gene Therapy and Regenerative Medicine Symposium

The GBA International Cell/Gene Therapy and Regenerative Medicine Symposium was organized by The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and co-organized by the Second Affiliated Hospital of CUHK-Shenzhen. This forum brought outstanding experts, from home and abroad, in the fields of cell and gene therapy and regenerative medicine together with clinical physician-scientists, educators, researchers, and medical professionals. This group discussed the world's most cutting-edge biomedical science and advanced technologies for altering or mitigating diseases at the tissue, cellar, and genetic levels. The forum delved into clinical treatment approaches and the mechanisms and applications behind the science and technology. It also provided an international professional platform for distinguished professionals and medical leaders to discuss collaboration, express opinions, and exchange knowledge. 

Professor Rocky S. Tuan, vice-chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and president of CUHK and chairman of Governing Board of CUHK-Shenzhen, and Professor Davy Cheng, the founding dean of the School of Medicine, CUHK-Shenzhen, served as the co-chairs of the forum. Leaders from the Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Bureau delivered speeches, extending their best wishes for the forum's success. In the presence of the guests, the School of Medicine, CUHK-Shenzhen and Weill Cornell Medicine, Cornell University signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will initiate comprehensive cooperation in education, scientific research, and talent development between the two institutions and promote deeper collaboration in the future.

The forum had two parts consisting of keynote speeches and themed presentations. Professor Rocky S. Tuan, an academician of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and president of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Yuk Ming Denis Lo, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and vice-dean (research) of the School of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Professor Mark A. Kay, chair of the Genetics Department and Pediatrics at Stanford University, delivered keynote speeches at the forum. Themed discussions revolved around “Tissue-based Therapy” "Cell-based Therapy,"  and  "Gene Therapy." Guests included Professor Li Renke, an academician of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, Professor Deng Hongkui, director of the Stem Cell Research Center at Peking University, and Dr. Gina Jiang, president of the Hong Kong Biotechnology Organization, shared their latest research and unique insights.

On an occasion marking the 10th anniversary of the founding of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, the four forums created a high-quality academic exchange. Experts and scholars shared cutting-edge theories and practices from their fields, and the brilliant academic exchanges brought new perspectives and profound academic inspiration to the audience. These four forums were part of the series of academic activities celebrating the anniversary. During the anniversary period, the university will host an academicians' summit, academic seminars, international conferences, industry forums, and other academic activities. These events will continue to introduce new ideas, perspectives, and concepts as well as gather wisdom and experience from key academic fields. This represents CUHK -Shenzhen's academic contributions and responsibilities in the new era.
